  • The North American Meat Institute, an affiliate organization of LHCA, last week launched its Protein PACT initiative and announced that 100 percent of its members will deliver independently approved science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets in line with the Paris Climate Agreement goals by 2030. Monthly Drought Monitor - November 2021

Over the past week, multiple storm systems moved into the Pacific Coast, resulting in mostly beneficial precipitation in western portions of Washington, Oregon and northern California. Some of these areas saw improvements to ongoing drought conditions as a result of these precipitation events. Read more here.

  • LHCA joined 84 other organizations in sending a letter to the Federal Maritime Commission expressing concern about the implementation of new container excess dwell fees that have been established at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Read more here
  • U.S. trade officials, including U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, kicked off a series of meetings this week in Japan and Korea aimed at strengthening economic ties with two of the largest markets for U.S. agriculture exports. More here
  • President Joe Biden underscored the importance of Beijing fulfilling its commitments under the Phase 1 trade deal during his meeting with China's President Xi Jinping on Monday. Read more.

Weekly Hides and Skins Stats 

  • Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending November 4, 2021, were 638,400 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 40,600 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 361,300 and of wet blue were 94,700. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Italy was the largest destination for wet blue. See more.   • U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 655,000 last week, an increase of 0.8 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 28,908,000 head, up 3 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
  • USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for seven types of hides at seven price points, with a spread of $13 for branded southwest cows to $31 for Colorado branded steers. See more.
