Other News

  • Reps. Garamendi (D-CA) and Johnson (R-SD) last week introduced the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2021, which, if passed, would address many U.S. agriculture sector concerns regarding unreasonable ocean carrier practices. LHCA played a key role in pushing for this legislation. 
  • APHIS is amending the animal and animal product import regulations in order to reflect the UK's exit from the European Union. More here.

Monsoonal moisture was squelched this week, in contrast to the heavy rainfall that had been pelting the southern Rockies and – to a lesser extent – much of the interior West. Totals between 1 and 2 inches were limited to a few patches in southeastern Arizona, central and south-central New Mexico, and scattered higher elevations in central Colorado and central Montana. Weekly Hides and Skins Stats 

  • Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending August 5, 2021, were 328,400 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 135,700 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 416,800 and of wet blue were 161,700. China was the largest buyer of both cured hides and wet blue. See more. For historical data, click here
  • U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 639,000 last week, a decrease of 0.3 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 20,522,000 head, up 4.2 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
  • USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for six types of hides at six price points, with a spread of $22 for branded southwest cows to $58 for butt branded steers. See more.
