LHCA yesterday unveiled the second in a series of videos as part of an international campaign communicating the natural, sustainable and durable nature of leather. The powerful video features Yoyo Sun, a Muay Thai champion and sport and fashion blogger with more than two million followers. Weekly Hides and Skins Stats 

  • Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending April 15, 2021, were 358,300 pieces and net sales of wet blues were 72,200 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 378,100 and of wet blues were 136,000. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and was the largest destination for wet blues. See more.   • U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 665,000 last week, an increase of 3.9 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 10,305,000 head, up 1.6 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
  • USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for five types of U.S. hides at five price points with a spread of $23 for branded southwest cows to $45.50 for Colorado branded steers. See more.

  • LHCA yesterday unveiled the second in a series of videos as part of an international campaign communicating the natural, sustainable and durable nature of leather. The video features Yoyo Sun, Thai boxing champion of Shuangiing Showdown 9. In addition to being a Muay Thai champion, she is a sport and fashion blogger with more than two million followers and was the first Chinese person to feature in an Apple Watch commercial. The powerful video draws parallels between the adaptability and durability needed to shine as a Muay Thai star and the qualities of leather. To view the video, click here.
  • LHCA President Stephen Sothmann recently joined Sustainable Talks with N&N to record a podcast detailing the U.S. leather industry's sustainability efforts. The discussion also covered topics including animal welfare and traceability. To view the podcast on YouTube, click here.
  • Last week, we alerted you to APLF's new digital sourcing platform, sampleroom, which connects buyers with suppliers across the world through live chats, video conferences, and other communications capabilities. The platform was released in conjunction with a webinar series presented by top leather and fashion industry experts and professionals, who shared insights about the latest trends in the leather and fashion markets, with topics ranging from sustainability to the future of leather. LHCA President Stephen Sothamnn participated in a discussion focused on the environmental impact of discarding hides as well as common misleading claims embraced by makers of leather alternatives.   • The Leather Research Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati is hiring a senior research associate, who will be responsible for coordinating research studies involving leather tanning (novel tanning agents/processes), assist in the root cause analysis of industry problems (generally cured hides & wet blue/wet white hides), help formulate specifications and recommend test protocols to address field complaints experienced by clients and assist with the creation and presentation of the educational content that the department offers. Applicants are required to have a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and 3+ years tannery experience. Cattle on feed

 

  • Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market as of April 1, 2021, totaled 11.9 million head. The inventory was 5 percent above April 1, 2020. Read the report here.
  • The Monthly Livestock Slaughter report is now available. March 2021 cattle slaughter totaled 3.01 million head, up 3 percent from March 2020. Get a summary of the data here.
