Industry Updates

  • LHCA joined 30 other international leather industry organizations in calling on the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) to prioritize natural materials as a means of directly mitigating climate impact. The organizations released the Leather Manifesto, which challenges the COP26 to recognize the cyclical, climate-efficient characteristics of natural fibers, like leather, and their potential to reduce the climate impacts of consumer products. Philomena's striking "Dark and Bright" bag is made of vegetable tanned leather and comes in two colors, with reversible, adjustable straps.   • The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach announced that new fees will be imposed on local-delivery containers that remain at terminals nine days or longer, and on rail containers that dwell for three days or longer. The ports will charge ocean carriers with cargo in these two categories $100 per container, increasing in $100 increments per container per day. Read more.

Weekly Hides and Skins Stats 

  • Net sales of cured cattle hides reported for the period ending October 21, 2021, were 566,000 pieces and net sales of wet blue were 212,900 pieces. Reported shipments of cured hides were 405,000 and of wet blue were 125,000. China was the largest buyer of cured hides and Vietnam was the largest destination for wet blue. See more.   • U.S. Cattle Slaughter was 668,000 last week, an increase of 1.1 percent from the previous week. Total cattle slaughter in 2021 is 27,603,000 head, up 3.2 percent from the same period in 2020. See more.
  • USDA AMS Major Packer Hide Price Report provided prices for seven types of hides at seven price points, with a spread of $12 for branded southwest cows to $32 for heavy Texas steers. See more.
