The winners of LHCA's Real Leather. Stay Different. Student Design Competition in China were celebrated at a glamourous award ceremony last week in Xinji. Winners were selected from 800 entries and received the unique opportunity to exhibit their creative designs during a highly-attended fashion show, that drew government officials, fashion experts and designers. read more

LHCA released a new video underscoring the harm caused to the environment by replacing natural hides with plastics and other materials. The video empirically demonstrates how hides are the sustainable material choice and how discarding them has deleterious consequences for the environment. Also, the Biden Administration issued a sweeping Executive Order addressing consolidation and other perceived anti-competitive features in numerous industries, including maritime shipping. read more

July has already been a busy month on the trade front, as efforts continue to address shipping issues at U.S. ports and as the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative engages in dialogues with key trading partners in North America, Asia and Europe. LHCA continues to advocate on behalf of the U.S. hides, skin and leather industry in these and other pertinent policy discussions. Also, an upcoming webinar will address how increasing transparency and improving traceability in the global leather and textile industry impacts sustainability. Plus, the latest hides, skins and leather trade data through May 2021 is now available, showing considerable growth in value and volume for key industry exports compared to 2020. read more

Last week, we alerted you that the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Marine Transportation held a hearing with commissioners from the Federal Maritime Commission and other witnesses to learn more about disruptions at U.S. ports and within the shipping industry. During the hearing, there were bipartisan calls to address impediments facing U.S. agricultural exports, including unchecked ocean carrier practices. Plus, the 2021 Real Leather. Stay Different. LHCA continues to actively engage Congress and the Administration to address ongoing shipping issues hampering U.S. agriculture trade and hide, skin and leather exports. At press time today, the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Marine Transportation is holding a hearing with commissioners from the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) and other witnesses to learn more about disruptions at U.S. ports and within the shipping industry. In advance of the hearing, LHCA worked as part of a broader coalition to prepare materials, including legislative proposals, questions and written testimony underscoring the deleterious practices of ocean carriers. Plus, the latest monthly trade data through April 2021 is now available. read more
